Sunrise Photography: 11/2/13

Not really considered a Commute Blessings post because these photos were taken during the weekend. But my boyfriend and I decided to wake up early to watch the sunrise one Saturday morning. When I woke up, it was foggy in my area. Gray clouds all over. I usually see nice views from Lake Merced/SF State so that was our first choice. We drove there...all gray. We tried Twin Peaks. All fog, everywhere. Our last idea: Brisbane. And that was a good choice too. The sun was starting to rise already and we found a good spot. I could've definitely done without the trees but with the GoPro's wide angle, I couldn't get them out of the shot. Still great photos though and I have no regrets about our last minute location.

P.S. The wide angle definitely did not do my face justice... :/ #goproproblems haha

Switching from iPhone 4 to Samsung Galaxy S4

Technology...what?! That's right, I'm bringing out the nerdy today. Yes, yes. If you didn't already know, I was a Business major with a concentration in Information Systems. Slightly tech savvy with a love for social media. That's me!

So let me go through the steps I took, just in case you make the same change (and somehow trust me with your transition rather than an actual technology blog or article or how-to).

My goals:
  1. Purchase the Galaxy S4
  2. Unlock my iPhone 4
  3. Transfer everything from iPhone 4 to Galaxy S4
Here's how it went:
  1. Purchased the Galaxy S4 from Walmart. Got a great deal of $138 + $40 Walmart gift card, what up!! (However, it's an e-gift card and was emailed to me a couple months after my purchase.)
  2. Followed this article on how to unlock my iPhone 4. So I called AT&T, backed up my phone, restored my phone (not to factory settings) but didn't get a notification saying it was unlocked. I'm hoping it is...
  3. Used the app from to help transfer over everything except for music. I ran out of space! I had used up about 14gb out of my 16gb phone storage so I transferred my music separately using the same app two months after because I had to get a microSD card for more storage space.
The problems I ran into:
  • All my contacts didn't transfer as desired. This was a huge problem. I think when I started transferring my contacts, I chose an option to sync it with my Gmail. However, this was a huge mistake because my Gmail had only stored emails up until that point. So instead of consolidating all contact information for my contacts from both my phone and Gmail account like I thought it would, it overwrote my phone contact information for those people I had emails for in my Gmail and left me with just their emails (if that makes sense). So for people in my Gmail contact list, I only have their emails and not their phone numbers anymore...which was very unfortunate. I'm still missing phone numbers to this day; just been too lazy to ask for phone numbers until I really needed them. 
  • Needing more space. I ordered the 16gb S4 because I knew I could buy a microSD to make up for the lost storage but it didn't occur to me that I was going from a 32gb iPhone to a 16gb S4 and didn't purchase a microSD ahead of time to make transferring smoother and faster. Therefore, my tons of music couldn't be transferred until I got a microSD, which I purchased in 64gb due to my love for taking pictures and videos :)
  • I wasn't receiving certain texts. I noticed this when my mom told me she sent me texts but I received none. I did research and realized this was because I couldn't receive iMessages from people with iPhones. The problem is that my iMessage was turned on on my iPhone and people were saying you had to turn it off before making the switch to an S4. To fix this, I had to turn on my iPhone again, turn off iMessage, and unregister my iPhone and disable its association with my Apple ID.
  • Group texts wouldn't be received. One of my friends told me that he went to the Samsung Messaging app, clicked to Settings, and checked the Group Messaging box. I've been able to receive group texts afterward.

Final thoughts

Overall, my switch wasn't as smooth as I had hoped it would be. If you plan on making the switch, I hope my mistakes and the issues I ran into will help prepare you for a better transition than mine was. On a lighter note, I'll be releasing a Likes/Dislikes (or Pros/Cons) post on the Galaxy S4 very soon so keep an eye out for that SGS4 users!!

First Attempt at Boiling Crab!

So one night I decided to imitate The Boiling Crab's (The Whole Sha-bang). If you don't know what The Boiling Crab is, it's restaurant chain we have in California (originally from Texas) that specializes in a delicious cajun/garlic/butter/lemony sauce that they drench seafood in, topped off with a great hands-on, finger-licking experience (see The Boiling Crab). 

Anyway, just a warning. This blog post is going to be long! A lot of thought went into my attempt to make Boiling Crab. I watched a few videos and looked at a few recipes online (links at the bottom) and just kinda took what was common from most of them. I hope I help save you time from comparing online recipes with my one blog post!

By the way, It turned out pretty delicious! A little too spicy for my taste but it satisfied my craving without standing in line forever and I even had leftovers. It didn't take that much longer than cooking a typical dinner. Alone it took about 1-1.5hrs (even shorter if you cook with a partner!) So if you want to try for yourself, keep reading :)

Keep in mind this is what I used for 2.5lbs of seafood.
  • 2.5lbs seafood medley from Costco (shrimp, mussels, calamari, scallops)
  • 1 ear of corn
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) of butter
  • 1 lemon
  • 5 cloves of garlic
  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • 2 tablespoons lemon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons cajun seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons cayenne pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Old Bay Seasoning
  • Cooked rice
What we didn't end up using in our recipe but was suggested on online sources:
  • Crawfish, Shrimp, & Crab Boil in a Bag
  • Louisiana Hot Sauce
  • Other seafoods (e.g. crawfish, crab) or meats (i.e. sausage)
1. Rinse seafood and drain. Repeat a few times. On the side, rinse rice and put it in a rice cooker.
2. Cut the lemon into halves. Boil the seafood in hot water with a lemon half for about 3 mins and put to the side. 
3. While rinsing and boiling the seafood, in a large saucepan, melt the 2 sticks of butter on low. On the side, peel and chop the cloves of garlic and add it to the butter when you can. 

4. Take equal parts of each seasoning and mix it together. I did 2 tablespoons of each but I would advise that you start with 1 tablespoon of each first. Add it to the melted butter and garlic and see how you like the taste. Then decide to add more seasoning if desired. The number of garlic cloves you use can probably vary too, depending on your taste. 
4. Mix in the seafood and let it simmer in the sauce for a few minutes and it's done! You can use the leftover unused lemon to squeeze onto the seafood after if you like.

What I Would've Done Differently
  • Boil seafood with lemon. I actually didn't remember to do this til the very end so I'll try to remember next time. 
  • Start out with 1 tablespoon of seasoning and increase from there. I actually started out with 2 tablespoons but it was a little too spicy and a little too much seasoning than I'd like. 
  • Have a bigger strainer and boiling pot on hand. It took a few rounds of rinsing and boiling with a small strainer and medium boiling pot. 
  • DO NOT touch the Crab Boil in a Bag (or any other seasoning) and then touch your nose or face. It burned so much...
  • Use better seafood!

Commute Blessings: 10/29/13

Hello there!

If you didn't know....I JUST GOT A GOPRO HERO 2!!!! My boyfriend gave it to me because he knew I really cherished the views from my commute and thought it would be a lot easier to use and better at capturing what I drove through.

So I'm starting a new series of posts called "Commute Blessings". These will be posts including photos for a specific day. Some days will have more photos than others--it just depends on how good the views are! I know it's a weird/cheesy title but I'm tired and that's the first thing that came to mind. I guess I could always change it later if I come up with something way better! Anyway, it's titled Commute Blessings because these are the views I see while commuting to work and I feel really blessed to be able to see them. Whether you're asleep at this time or in a completely different part of the state, country, or even world, this is just to show you what it looks like to me at the time I'm driving. I also felt like it was a great opportunity to showcase the gorgeous beauty (#sorrynotsorry for the redundancy) of God's creation. Enjoyyy! :)
